Looking After Your Feet in a Heatwave

Looking After Your Feet in a Heatwave

Summer heat doesn't just make you reach for the sun cream, it puts your feet under pressure too. Longer days in sandals, more time on hard, hot pavements, and higher temperatures overall all take a toll on your skin.

The Problem

Heat affects feet in three main ways:

  • Increased sweating – feet have around 250,000 sweat glands each, and hot weather sends them into overdrive, creating the perfect environment for odour-causing bacteria.
  • Drier, more exposed skin – sandals and open shoes mean heels and soles get more sun and air exposure with less cushioning, which can speed up dryness, rough patches and cracked heels.
  • Tired, heavy legs – heat causes blood vessels to dilate, which can leave legs feeling swollen, achy and fatigued by the end of the day, especially after a lot of standing or walking.

Prevention

A few small habits go a long way in the heat:

  • Rotate your footwear so shoes and sandals have time to fully dry out between wears.
  • Keep feet clean and completely dry before applying any product, especially between the toes.
  • Moisturise daily rather than waiting for heels to start cracking, prevention is far easier to maintain than repair.
  • Elevate your legs for a few minutes when you get the chance, particularly after a day of standing or travelling.

Treatment

If the heat has already caught up with your feet, the fix depends on what's showing up:

  • Sweat and odour need a targeted moisture-control approach rather than just washing more often.
  • Dry, rough or cracked skin needs a proper hydrating treatment, not just a splash of scented lotion, which often sits on the surface rather than absorbing.
  • Tired, heavy legs benefit from ingredients that support circulation, not just a foot rub.
