The Problem

Peeling skin on the feet is a common concern and one that can have a few different causes. Moist, itchy, peeling skin between the toes or on the bottom of the feet can signal a fungal infection, often similar to athlete's foot. It can also be caused by clammy feet or frequent barefoot exposure in public spaces such as swimming pools, gyms and changing rooms, where fungal infections spread easily.
If the peeling is accompanied by itching, scaling or redness, an antifungal formula is likely to be the most effective treatment. If the skin is simply dry and flaking without those symptoms, a moisturising formula containing urea is usually the right approach.
Prevention
A few simple habits can help reduce the likelihood of peeling skin returning:
- Keep feet clean and dry, retained moisture between the toes creates the ideal environment for fungal infections
- Wear foot coverings in wet public areas such as pools and changing rooms
- Wear clean, moisture-wicking socks and rotate your footwear so shoes dry out fully between wears
- If you have sweaty feet, use a formula that reduces perspiration, clammy skin is more prone to peeling and fungal infection
Treatment
For peeling skin associated with itching, scaling or redness, look for a formula that contains antifungal agents and is free from added moisturisers, moisture can make fungal conditions worse rather than better.
For dry, flaking skin without those symptoms, a urea-based mousse will rehydrate and restore the skin barrier.
