The Problem

There are around 250,000 sweat glands in each foot, and they can produce a significant amount of moisture throughout the day. For some people the sweating is excessive; a condition known as plantar hyperhidrosis.
Sweaty feet aren't just uncomfortable. The warm, moist environment they create is ideal for bacteria to thrive and it's that bacterial activity that leads to foot odour. Left unaddressed, the same conditions can also contribute to fungal infections such as athlete's foot.
If your socks feel damp by mid-morning, your feet feel clammy in shoes, or you notice a persistent odour that returns quickly after washing, it's worth looking at an effective treatment rather than relying on washing alone.
Is It Your Feet or Your Shoes?

It's worth checking whether the smell is coming from your feet or your footwear because the answer determines which product will help most.
Over time, shoes absorb sweat and bacteria. If your feet feel clean but the smell returns quickly once you put your shoes on, the shoes themselves are likely the main source. Treating your feet without treating your shoes will only get you so far.
Prevention
Alongside a targeted treatment, a few simple habits go a long way:
- Choose shoes made from breathable materials where possible, and make sure they're not too tight as crowding the feet increases sweating
- Wear moisture-wicking socks and change them daily
- Rotate your footwear so shoes can dry fully between wears
- Wash and dry feet thoroughly every day, paying attention to the spaces between the toes
Treatment
For sweaty feet, look for a formula with ingredients that help reduce perspiration at the skin's surface alongside antibacterial properties to keep odour under control.
For foot odour, a deodorant spray with natural antibacterial ingredients tackles the bacteria responsible for the smell rather than simply masking it.
For shoe odour, a dedicated shoe spray that reaches the lining and insole where bacteria build up — is more effective than applying foot products to the shoe.
